Jason Whong

Friends,

One of my favorite things about meeting people is hearing their stories. Whether the story is about something ordinary, such as how many places they’ve worn a particular hat, or something extraordinary, such as how they came to make a major life decision, I’m always interested in learning about the events that shaped someone, as well as whether there are any lessons to be gleaned from the retelling.

That’s why this issue features more stories about Marylanders.

In the cover story, on page 24, April Chen introduces us to Joyce Strickland of Columbia, whose garden has a history. Each plant has its own origin story, connecting her to family and friends.

Ellen Moyer tells us on page 22 about the months Roz Dove of Annapolis spent in 1974 (when she was known as Roz Green) trekking on horseback from Colorado to Maryland. What an adventure!

Nancy J. Schaaf tells her own story about how she decided — at age sixty — that it was time to jump out of a perfectly good airplane, and what she learned from the experience.

If you’ve got stories like these that you think ought to be shared in this magazine and preserved for posterity, please drop me a note at [email protected].

In addition to these interesting tales, you’ll still find the same kinds of articles you’re used to seeing in this issue of OutLook by the Bay. Whether you’re interested in learning about how ketchup used to be made, or how you can build a community of book traders just by building a box, or about the Baltimore oriole, you’ll find this issue a worthwhile way to spend your time.

OutLook by the Bay has been bringing you good reads since 2008, and we would like to continue to bring you these stories for many years to come. That’s why I would like you to thoughtfully consider subscribing to this magazine.

Here’s the big ask: if this magazine has meant anything to you since it started, please demonstrate your approval by subscribing today.
