After all we’ve been though in 2020 and 2021, maybe it’s time for a road trip. Or a plane trip. Or a train trip. Maybe even a boat, like the people on the cover of this issue.

This issue of OutLook by the Bay is full of articles that can inspire your travel plans, whether you’re interested in attractions nearby, like the Irish Railroad Workers Museum in Baltimore (page 12), or something halfway around the world, like the Lantern Festival in Hangzhou, China (page 18).

Maybe you’re interested in taking a different mode of transportation to someplace familiar. Have a look at Sharon Schultz’s trip to the National Mall (page 20), for which she took the MARC Penn Line and didn’t have to drive or take the subway. A sidebar with that article explains how to make the same trip on an MTA Commuter Bus from Severna Park or Annapolis.

Maybe you’d like to head south? Leah Lancione writes from Virginia Beach with a roundup of exciting things to see (page 24).

Maybe you’d like to head north and marvel at glass art, and make your own glass? Barbara Aiken describes her trip to Corning, New York (page 36), and even provides good dining suggestions.

Prefer to shop for the unclaimed possessions of other travelers? Head down to Scottsboro, Alabama, to the Unclaimed Baggage Center. Sheila O’Connor explains how (page 7).

If you’re planning to avoid travel, there’s still plenty to read about this issue, like how to use science to fulfill your New Year’s resolutions (page 38), the history of peanut butter (page 10), or even how to walk, run or bike a great distance while staying at home (page 33).

As always, I hope you enjoy this issue. If you’ve got any stories about people doing interesting things, like Carla Werme’s new hobby, pottery painting (page 28), please feel free to pass them along. I’m also interested in hearing about people’s adventures or accomplishments, even if they happened decades ago. Your tips could result in the next issue’s cover story. Email me at [email protected].
