Recently, a moving van pulled up in front of Gail and Ryan’s large, beautiful Annapolis house. It had been their home for 42 years and where they had raised their children. Gail and Ryan, who are both in good health, had made a conscious choice months earlier to “lighten their load” by selling their large family home. Moving to smaller quarters in a retirement community would mean so much less to take care of, freeing them to do what they enjoyed most.

Gail and Ryan are part of a larger trend. With more seniors living longer, healthier lives, housing options have expanded. During this literal silver tsunami, more seniors have been making a conscious choice to downsize from the large family home to retirement and cottage communities to gain the freedom they provide – a kind of “downsize your home, upgrade your life” movement.

Knowing their decision was the right one, Gail and Ryan also knew there was a huge task ahead. Their large house was filled with decades’ worth of keepsakes, furnishings, artwork, clothing, and more. While their children and friends were willing to help, they didn’t want to burden anyone. Help with the physical portion of relocation was obviously needed. Wisely, Gail and Ryan also recognized that sorting through and letting go of possessions they had had for so many years could trigger strong emotions.

Gail and Ryan hired Chesapeake Transitions, an Annapolis-based Senior Move Management company. A Certified Senior Move Manager®, Chesapeake Transitions was a one-stop shop for the services the couple needed. They could not only help manage sorting, packing, and logistics, but Chesapeake Transitions also had vetted vendors for additional needed services, such as a realtor, mover, attorney, trash removal, and contractors for any necessary repairs before the house could be placed on the market.

Chesapeake Transitions developed a timeline and schedule for the move. Measurements of their new home were taken so the couple could make informed decisions about what could move with them. Gail and Ryan’s children took a few items they wanted to keep, and then the task of sorting truly began. As they began sorting through a lifetime’s worth of possessions, Gail and Ryan naturally got bogged down at times in memories. They appreciated the Chesapeake Transitions team’s compassionate help, which kept the process moving.

Everything previously chosen to move with Gail and Ryan was packed up by the Chesapeake Transitions team, while the remaining items were prepared for an estate sale. Less than 24 hours after the moving van had pulled up to the house, Gail and Ryan walked into their new home, a two-bedroom with a den retirement apartment. The Chesapeake Transitions team had unpacked and set everything up, even putting the dishes away in the kitchen cabinets.

Gail and Ryan found themselves blinking back tears of relief and joy! They had made the huge transition without burdening their children or friends. Now, they really began to focus on picking up hobbies they hadn’t had time for, making new friends, trying pickleball – the possibilities were endless. As the couple settled in, Chesapeake Transitions held an estate sale for the items remaining in the house. Items not sold were donated to the charities Gail and Ryan had chosen. A cleaning service was brought in, and Chesapeake Transitions contacted the realtor to say the house was now truly empty.

In the meantime, Gail and Ryan were now talking about travel!
