For over 40 years, Dee and Joe had lived in their cozy rancher filled with memories, laughter, and plenty of furniture. At age 75 and 76, the thought of moving felt overwhelming, especially for Dee, who confessed during our first meeting, “I don’t even know where to start. But I think it’s time.”

Dee wasn’t necessarily thinking about a smaller living space, but knew she wanted something different; newer, low-maintenance, and in an age 55+ community with amenities. Joe, calm and steady, nodded and said, “We’re ready to enjoy life a bit more.”

Since Dee and Joe were in a position to buy before selling their rancher, we focused on finding their new home first. After helping identify their wants and needs, I gave Dee and Joe some pointers, and they dove enthusiastically into an online search to compare communities and track new listings. They spotted a 55+ neighborhood that checked all their boxes and had several listings. They texted me right away: “Can we go visit?”

We toured a few homes before walking into “the one”. Dee’s face lit up instantly. The home had wide hallways, a bright sunroom, and a kitchen that put a twinkle in Dee’s eye. Ironically, it had more square footage than their rancher. We all laughed.

“So much for downsizing!” I said.

But Dee replied, “Oh, this is downsizing. Less stress. No stairs, no yard work, no old systems to repair. And more time for pickleball, travel, and friends.”

That’s when it clicked: downsizing isn’t always about less square footage. For Dee and Joe, it was about simplifying, upgrading, and choosing a space that better matched the life they want to live now.

There’s still packing to do, and saying goodbye to their long-time home won’t be easy, but Dee and Joe are already picturing their first cookout on their new patio.  This is the heart of my work — not just helping people move houses, but helping them move forward.
